Miracle

Miracle was a fawn that came into Hoosier Wildlife Rescue during the summer of 2026, and from the very beginning, she was exactly what her name suggested.

She was an older fawn who had been hit by a car. And when I say hit, I mean she was hit hard. She didn't just get bumped or knocked down. She tumbled. She went tumbling and tumbling, and by the time she made it to us, we knew she had been through something incredibly traumatic.

I remember putting her into a carrier when she first arrived and looking at her, knowing how serious her injuries were. My first thought was honestly, "Well, she's probably going to pass overnight." It was one of those moments in wildlife rehabilitation where you are doing everything you can, but you also have to prepare yourself for the possibility that it still might not be enough.

We kept quiet about Miracle in the beginning. Not because we didn't care about her, but because we cared so much. We knew how quickly people would fall in love with her. We knew people would want updates and would be cheering her on, but we also knew that she was incredibly fragile. We didn't want to share her story with everyone and then have to share heartbreaking news shortly after.

So we waited.

We watched.

And Miracle started surprising us.

One day passed. Then another. Then another. Somehow, this little deer who we weren't sure would make it through the night was still here. Then she started eating a little bit. It wasn't a huge amount, but in wildlife rehabilitation, those little victories are everything. A little bit of food. A little more strength. A little more fight.

Then came the moment that absolutely shocked us.

She stood.

After everything she had been through, after the injuries, the trauma, and the uncertainty, Miracle stood up.

It wasn't perfect. She was still hurt. She still had a long road ahead of her. But she stood, and that was something we never thought we would see when she first arrived. It was one of those moments where you stop and realize just how incredibly strong these animals can be.

Miracle fought harder than we expected. She showed us over and over again that she wasn't ready to give up.

Unfortunately, despite all of her strength and everything we did for her, her injuries were just too severe. Our sweet Miracle eventually lost her fight.

And while those are the moments that break your heart in wildlife rehabilitation, they are also the moments that remind you why we do this. Every animal deserves a chance. Every animal deserves to be cared for, even when the outcome isn't the one we hope for.

Miracle wasn't just a fawn who was hit by a car. She was a fighter. She was a reminder that sometimes animals can surprise us. She gave us days we didn't think we would have. She gave us hope when we were preparing ourselves for goodbye.

She may not have made it back to the woods, but she showed us something important while she was here.

She fought.

And for a little deer named Miracle, that was more than enough.
